Broken Vessels: a poem by Jacob Hoffman

Broken Vessels

You girl-woman of fire hair
Next to you my love is a burnt match
Smothered years before your birth

My love is an echo of the Big Bang
The breaking of childhood vessels
A primal love slain in a cadaverous nest
That my mother wove from wire

Say what you wish with lisping glee
You lovely northern little girl
Speak your light and airy disputes
To the four winds that only adore you
While I seal my lips against ugly words
Of love that burns and gnaws
