Jesmyn Ward’s novel Salvage the Bones is about as perfectly
paced as a novel can be; the author continues to build on events in the work, and by
the end, the reader is fully invested in the characters and their outcome.
The characters in this novel are up against so much: race,
poverty, climate change, yet they persevere.
