I tried to read the go to book on the Salem witch trials,
but it was too confusing. The narrative was
convoluted. Instead, try A Storm of
Witchcraft: The Salem Trials and the American Experience, by Emerson W. Baker. The writer brings us into this world, but we
don’t drown in it. Also, the author is
not wedded to any one theory of the ‘cause’ of the trials. This is not a book that purports to ‘solve’
the cause of the witch trial with some wacky theory. There is
no one cause. It was a complex event,
with multiple origins You will read that, and more in this excellent account.
